Meeting with H.E. President Maithripala Sirisena
On December 11, the Buddhist Summit delegation had a meeting with H.E. President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka. The meeting was held at the audience room in his private residence, lasting far beyond the scheduled meeting time. His Excellency, a pious Buddhist, praised the activities and achievements of Buddhist Summit and stated his firm belief that Buddhism is a great religion which can bring peace and serenity to the world. His Excellency also expressed that he was delighted to hold the Buddhist Summit conference in his country.
His Excellency declared that the Seventh Buddhist Summit would be organized as a national event and promised the full support and cooperation of the government of Sri Lanka. Then His Excellency shook hands with each delegate, showing his determination for the success of the Seventh Buddhist Summit and the further propagation of Buddhism.
Meeting with H.E. the Prime Minister, ministers, and Government Officials
On December 10, the Buddhist Summit delegation had meetings in succession with H.E. Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister, H.E. Karu Jayasuriya, Speaker of the Parliament, H.E. Thilanga Sumathipala, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, H.E. Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Minister of Buddhasasana, and H.E. Daya Gamage, Minister of Primary Industries, and his wife, H.E. Dr. Anoma Gamage, Deputy Minister of Petroleum Resources Development, at the Parliament Building of Sri Lanka. All of them expressed their willingness to fully support the Seventh Buddhist Summit that will be held in their own country.
At the meeting with H.E. Thilanga Sumathipala, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament who was formally appointed as the chairperson of the Organizing Committee, and H.E. the Minister of Buddhasasana, the delegation talked about the preparations for the coming Buddhist Summit conference. In order to discuss further about the Seventh Buddhist Summit, H.E. the Deputy Speaker decided to have another preparatory meeting with the Buddhist Summit delegation on December 14.
Following H.E. the President of Sri Lanka, H.E. the Prime Minister and other ministers and government officials all reconfirmed their strong commitment to bringing about the success of the Seventh Buddhist Summit under the auspices of the government of Sri Lanka.
On December 14, 2016, the delegation had a preparatory meeting for the Seventh Buddhist Summit with H.E. Thilanga Sumathipala, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, who was appointed to be in charge of organizing the Buddhist Summit conference by H.E. the President of Sri Lanka.
At the meeting, they had a fruitful discussion about the direction and the schedule for preparation. His Excellency agreed with holding several preparatory meetings and repeatedly expressed all-out cooperation.
Prior to the preparatory meeting, the delegation met with H.E. Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Minister of Buddhasasana, at his private residence. On December 15, a meeting was held with his secretary and the officials in charge of practical tasks at the office in the Ministry of Buddhasasana.
On the occasion of the visit to Sri Lanka in May 2017, the Buddhist Summit delegation held a joint meeting with the members of Organizing Committee of Sri Lanka. In the afternoon of May 13, when H.E. Thilanga Sumathipala took the chair, the delegates earnestly exchanged views with Sri Lankan officials.
On May 14, H.E. Thilanga Sumathipala held a meeting in the committee’s headquarters office that His Excellency specially set up for the preparation of the Seventh Buddhist Summit. Subjects for discussion included schedule, venue, study tour, and other issues.
